Porto

  • Famous for: Port Wine, Capital of the North, beautiful city views

  • Biggest attractions: Wine cellars (in the other side of the river in Gaia), Ribeira (downtown next to the river), Harry Potter Library (Livraria Lello)

  • Recommended length of stay: 1-3 days

  • Where and what to eat:

    • Typical dishes: francesinha (meat sandwich with many layers and beer sauce), Tripas à Moda do Porto (pork tripe done Porto style) and Bifanas.

    • Recommended restaurants: Cervejaria Brasão Aliados (Francesinha), Clube 21 – Passos Manuel, Astro (best bifanas in town!), Marisqueira A Antiga (Matosinhos), Trinkas, Taberna Rio

    • Also very nice option to eat: old fish and fruit markets converted into food halls (Mercado Municipal de Gaia, Mercado do Bom Sucesso)

    • Port Wine Cellars visits and tastings: they are all good, but we’ve visited these two that we loved – Calem for the chocolate pairings, and Augusto’s for the independent, family-run feel

  • What else do do:

    • Walk around the city center and see: Avenida dos Aliados (heart of the city, beautiful avenue with city hall and beautiful architecture), São Bento train station (amazing tiles), walk across Ponte D. Luís (from upper level and lower level, both beautiful!)

    • Torre dos Clérigos: one of the best panoramic views of the city from a historic tower. Any time of the day is perfect, but sunset is especially amazing

    • To learn more about the history of the city there is a recent exhibition called Porto Legends that we recommend!

    • Jardins do Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace gardens) and Casa da Música

    • Night out: Downtown

    • Famous hotels: Le Monumental, A Brasileira, The Yeatman, Intercontinental
